Since the spring of 2018, AmSpec is a new player active in the port of Rotterdam in the field of ship cargo inspection in the oil & petrochemical industry. In addition to the recently opened laboratory in Rozenburg, which as the Rotterdam Technical Center also functions as a knowledge center for the other European branches, labs are provided in Amsterdam and Antwerp.

The pie is big enough for one more player. This would have been the outcome of the market analysis that the American AmSpec carried out into the possibilities of gaining a foothold in the North Sea ports for their inspection and analysis services of ship cargoes, initially for the petrochemical market. While many inspection and testing companies have the strategy of first building up their business from a limited basic package and gradually expanding depending on demand and commercial success, AmSpec immediately sets up a large laboratory in Rozenburg that can facilitate everything that is needed in the field. relevant market can be analyzed. And it does so very quickly, as is evident from the short history of the lab in Rozenburg. “We were able to make a quick start with the acquisition of PetroDesk. However, the Spijkenisse branch was far too small for our ambitious plans. In Rozenburg we found a suitable building with sufficient space, but which had to be completely gutted. In September 2017, the first contours for the design of the lab were drawn up, after which the renovation started a month later and we were able to run the first analyzes from April 2018,” laboratory manager Julian van Berkum lists the milestones.

Unburdening

An important milestone for Julian himself is that he has been working at AmSpec since March this year. “In my capacity as laboratory manager and knowledge point of contact for laboratory matters, I missed a large part of the preparations, but the company has cleverly solved that lack of specific local lab expertise by entering into a far-reaching collaboration with Da Vinci Laboratory Solutions. First of all, Da Vinci provided advice on the lab layout and furniture and, based on the analyzes to be carried out, made an inventory of the required instruments and consumables. Da Vinci also took care of the entire procurement for these matters. In addition, Da Vinci took care of the delivery, installation and testing of the GC systems,” says the new laboratory manager.
