Thursday September 26 10:00 – 12:15

Location: Faraday Seminar Room in World of Electronics (Hall 9)

The embedded software largely determines the functionality of products. The share of embedded software in the entire (development) process is often underestimated. In this seminar we will discuss the costliness of embedded software and the crucial aspects involved. Various important themes, including testability, safety and maintenance, are discussed. This seminar provides valuable insight into the challenges and investments associated with embedded software, and highlights the importance of reliability and security across industries.

Seminar chairman: Gerard Fianen

How much does a KiloBytje embedded software development cost for you?

Do it yourself or outsource it? It doesn't matter much: the embedded software component is a major cost item in the total budget, especially with more complex embedded systems. It is often also a post that has been exceeded upon reflection. Not surprising because the “embedded software” is a flexible component that increasingly determines the value of the (end) product. This can even help determine the value of the company. This makes embedded software a valuable asset and should you spend a little more money on it, or not?

In this presentation we will discuss the factors that determine the KiloByte price of embedded software, how you can influence those factors and thus save costs.
Gilbert Gadet, Logic Technology

Embedded Software: Testing is not that expensive!

This presentation shows that it is important to spend time on testing at every stage of embedded software development. We show how attention is paid to testing in each phase and which forms of testing are applied in the different phases. Using a case study, we show what the consequences are if no testing is done in a phase.
Jeffrey Doctor, 3T

The impact of legislation and regulations on embedded software development

Due to increasing risks in the cyber security domain, the European Union is increasing the legal requirements imposed on the market.
These new requirements will have a major impact on the daily lives of embedded software developers, manufacturers and distributors.

Firstly, manufacturers of wireless communicating products must comply with additional Cyber Security requirements from the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) as of August 1, 2025. By 2027, all products with digital elements must comply with the Cyber Resillence Act (CRA).

The CRA not only has an impact on the product, but also on the product development process (secure product lifecycle management) and all facets of the ecosystem such as the cloud environment and associated mobile apps. In this presentation we will take you through the most important developments in the context of legislation and regulations and provide insight into the impact and added value of testing cycles and certification in the product development process.

Online embedded system in practice

What is involved in practice when you make an embedded system accessible online? AEMICS has developed an online tap lens. The beer brand logo on a beer tap has been replaced by a display with an embedded system. Videos and images can be shown via a cloud application. Effort and costs must be incurred to realize a secure cloud connection. This applies to both the cloud application and the embedded software. In this seminar, AEMICS explains from its own experience how this was achieved and what the learning moments were. And certainly not unimportant, what maintenance costs are involved when the system is used in practice.
