Self-driving labs (SDLs) are designed to autonomously perform experiments, speeding up research in fields like materials discovery, energy transition, and healthcare. Yet designing these complex, high-cost systems poses challenges in equipment integration, communication, and risk management. To address this, we propose a combined simulation-emulation approach: simulations guide design and reduce risks before physical deployment, while emulations enable rapid prototyping and testing in a digital environment. Together, they advance SDL development, optimize workflows, and enable efficient use of resources.
