This presentation explores how integrating an Active EMI Filter (AEF) into a Passive EMI Filter (PEF) can significantly reduce the size and reliance on passive components, particularly common-mode (CM) chokes. By using the Voltage Sense Current Inject (VSCI) feedback topology, both single-phase and three-phase AEFs are developed and tested. Simulation and measurement results show that the integrated AEF effectively suppresses conducted CM emissions by 15 to 23 dB in the 150 kHz to 1 MHz frequency range. The approach leads to a 40–45% reduction in CM choke size and a 4–14× reduction in inductance, resulting in a more compact, lightweight, and PCB-friendly design. The presentation also highlights the advantages for high-frequency converter applications and modern EMI filter design.
