3T and Sirius Medical develop medical device for tumor localization

3T and Sirius Medical have developed a medical device for tumor localization. On Thursday, September 30, both parties will provide an interactive presentation during the online edition of Electronics & Applications 2021. This session is called 'Development of electronics and algorithms for a magnetic tumor localization device' and deals with collaboration in the medical field.

Technology Manager Bert van den Berg provides this interactive presentation on behalf of 3T. The seminar explains how the startup Sirius Medical came into contact with 3T and explains how this collaboration resulted in a system, the so-called Sirius Pintuition. With this medical device, tumors can be marked in a less invasive way so that they can be found later. “The system has been developed for breast-conserving surgery. Research is also underway to see whether this technique can also be used for tumors in other places,” says Van den Berg.

When tumors need to be surgically removed, clinicians often use a wire or radioactive seed for localization. “Sirius Pintuition provides a less invasive and non-radioactive alternative to the usual tumor localization methods, using a magnetic seed,” says Van den Berg. “This system works based on magnetism. Implantation of a magnetic seed is much more comfortable for the patient than an implanted anchor wire.”

Customized solution
3T co-developed the electronics and measuring principle for this device. “In this presentation we will tell you more about how the device works,” Van den Berg explains. “In this way, the design challenges and requirements related to the medical guidelines are discussed in detail.”

In summary, Sirius Pintuition is a system for locating tumors without the use of an anchor wire or radioactive radiation. “The system works in real time and can find the seed up to five centimeters deep with mm accuracy and very high directionality. This invention enables the surgeon to locate the tumor accurately and intuitively,” concludes Van den Berg.
