When EMC is of vital importance
If wireless communication between medical applications is disrupted, this can have serious consequences for the patient. That is why Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) is an absolute necessity for medical instruments. SCHURTER works with developers in the medical industry on applications that meet the strictest EMC standards.

In patients with an implanted device, such as a pacemaker, communication between the device and a control unit takes place wirelessly via a radio signal. That radio signal has a certain frequency and therefore no disturbing radiation around that frequency range may be released from the electronics in the applications used. EMC therefore plays a crucial role in the development of such instruments. Touch Controller The design of the touch controller uses a printed circuit board with multiple copper layers. The outer layers act as shielding, so that the signals in the inner layer cannot cause emissions. Filter components are placed at cable connections that do have contact with the outside world and at the sensor connection, so that interference from the chip is stopped. Linear regulators are used instead of for the power supply
switched, because switched controllers produce interference.

Preventing radiation
LCD screen Many medical applications use an LCD screen, which is controlled using internal electronics. To limit emissions from the internal electronics, a shielding foil can be placed in front of the LCD screen. For this purpose, a mesh foil is used with an electrically conductive grid, which has a shielding function against interference from the internal electronics of the LCD screen. While many of these mesh films darken the image, SCHURTER uses a film with a very high transparency, so that the LCD image itself is not affected.

To test
Prototypes are tested for EMC properties in a radiation-free room specially developed for this purpose. The product is placed in the test room, with cabling connected
and enabled. All signals around the critical frequencies are recorded by an antenna in the test room and transmitted via a coaxial cable to a spectrum analyzer outside the room. An algorithm determines an average from this, which must lie between certain values for EMC approval.

Cost reduction in the production process Because attention was paid to the EMC requirements during the initial design of the product, the choice of materials and construction are tailored to this. This makes it possible to make a high-quality product that fits perfectly into the production process without much additional costs and that also has good EMC properties.
