The Netherlands opens the doors of the Global Coordinating Secretariat (GCS) in Wageningen, a center for global food innovation. Prime Minister Rutte announced this on Wednesday during a digital meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF).

The WEF wants to stimulate new technologies and innovations in the food chain in order to increase food security. The GCS must contribute to this by managing regional food innovation hubs established worldwide from the Netherlands. These hubs help bring together farmers, companies, scientists and other parties from the food chain with the aim of developing innovations and business and revenue models that can contribute to a more sustainable and future-proof food system.

Nearly two billion people worldwide have little or no access to nutritious and safe food. Approximately 690 million people lack proper nutrition or suffer from chronic hunger. With the predicted growth of the world population and the impact of the climate crisis, the urgency of food insecurity is increasing.

The cabinet and development company Oost NL - which works on behalf of the province of Gelderland and province of Overijssel) - provide financial support to the GCS to form a small core team. The GCS will help regional hubs scale up, drive new regional hubs and work on global partnerships for innovation.
