The PAMAS S40 – a milestone in the company's history
Online and offline, without pressure or under high pressure, in the laboratory or in the field – the versatility of PAMAS particle counters is evident. It typifies how continuous developments over the years have ensured that PAMAS remains a world leader in counting particles in liquids.
PAMAS has been making automatic particle counters for liquids for almost 30 years. Within a few minutes the user knows whether and to what extent a liquid sample is contaminated. A milestone in the development history was already reached in 1999 with the introduction of the PAMAS S40.
Read a short interview with Michael Schumacher, Head of R&D at PAMAS GmbH below:
-Mr. Schumacher, you have been working at PAMAS in the development department since 1995. What prompted the development of a completely new portable particle counter at the end of the 1990s, while there was already a portable device with the PAMAS S2?
Caterpillar approached us because they recognized the importance of contamination control to improve the reliability of their hydraulic systems. They couldn't find a suitable system and we weren't happy with the electronic systems at the time, so we combined our requirements and designed a system that was ahead of its time. In the 1990s, touchscreens were the technology of the future, a portable automatic particle counter weighing less than 10 kg was unknown and fully digital signal processing was brand new.
-Over the years, customer requirements have certainly changed or evolved? How did you react to that?
The hardware base of the S40 is still “state of the art”. If applications require changes, we can easily add features. We have regularly modified the S40 and adapted it to new applications for new and existing customers. I am sure that the S40 will form the basis for our future mobile particle counters for a long time to come.
-How do you think the market will develop or change in the future?
Particle counting is a key technology in many industries, from pharmaceuticals to hydraulics. From the system developer's point of view, the requirements are similar. However, from our customer's point of view, specific adjustments are required for each application. We monitor emerging industries very closely to continuously adapt our products to their requirements, so that we can always provide the ideal solution to the problem.
Our main goal is to be seen as a reliable supplier. We are the reference manufacturer for particle counters and we work hard to live up to that claim.
After almost 30 years of research and development, the portable particle counters of the PAMAS S40 product series are now available in a wide range of customized product versions for the cleanliness control of oil, fuel, phosphate esters and for water and water-based liquids.
