Semi-solid-state combines features of conventional lithium-ion technology with a partially solid electrolyte structure. By partially replacing the liquid component with a solid phase, a cell architecture is created with a much higher energy density and improved stability.
GEB pushes the boundary with this: their new GEB8540140 cell, with a nominal voltage of 3.8V and 14Ah, achieves an impressive energy density of nearly 500 Wh/kg, almost double that of standard Li-ion pouch cells.

Specifications

  • Cell type Semi-solid lithium pouch
  • Nominal voltage >3.8 V
  • Capacity 14 Ah
  • Max. continuous discharge current 3C
  • Initial internal resistance ≤2 mΩ
  • Cell weight approx. 113.5 g
  • Charging voltage 4.3 V
  • Discharge voltage 2.8V / 2.3V absolute minimum
  • Charging temperature 0 to 50 °C
  • Discharge temperature -40 to 50 °C
  • Cell dimensions 8.5 × 40 × 140 mm

According to the test conditions, the cell still delivers at least 9.8 Ah at 0.2C at -40 °C.

The compact pouch cell was initially intended for drones and RC vehicles, among other things, but the combination of low weight, high capacity, 3C discharge, and the wide temperature range also makes the technology interesting for industrial applications such as AGVs, power tools, mobile machines, and portable equipment.
