TDK introduces patented, non-isolated buck-boost DC-DC converters with an efficiency of up to 99 %
TDK Corporation (TSE: 6762) announces the introduction of the TDK-Lambda i9C series of non-isolated DC-DC buck-boost power modules with a capacity of 1500 W. These are designed to maximize system efficiency, reduce thermal load, and extend battery life in demanding industrial and battery-powered applications. The first version of the i9C series to be launched features an input voltage of 9 – 80 V, an output voltage of 9.6 – 60 V, and a current of up to 30 A. With a second version to be introduced soon featuring an input voltage range of 9 – 40 V, an output voltage of 5 – 36 V, and a current of up to 50 A, the voltage and current options of the series are being expanded.
The i9C series utilizes TDK-Lambda’s patented PHEPT (Programmable High-Efficiency Pass-Through) technology. With PHEPT, designers can define a specific input voltage window in which the module bypasses regulation (and thus stops switching) and the input is directly coupled to the output. As a result, there are no switching or conversion losses. When operating in this mode, efficiency can reach up to 99%, which significantly reduces heat generation and improves system reliability. Engineers designing battery-powered systems particularly benefit from this.
The i9C is housed in a compact, wide quarter-brick enclosure with an integrated base plate that supports convection, conduction, or forced air cooling. This makes it ideally suited for environments with high ambient temperatures and low airflow. Standard control and protection features include negative logic on/off control, power-good, remote sense, user-configurable overcurrent protection, low-power sleep mode, and full self-recovery protection. The user-configurable sleep mode programs the power module into a low-power state during inactivity or under light load. The configurable overcurrent protection reduces the load on both the power module and the load, which reduces or even eliminates the need for external circuitry for designers.
The i9C series is designed for use in industrial, communication, test and measurement, and battery-powered applications, including AGVs, AMRs, commercial drones, and humanoid robots. The modules are certified according to safety standards IEC/UL/CSA/EN 62368-1 and bear CE and UKCA markings for the Low Voltage Directive, the EMC Directive, and the RoHS Directive.
