Unidirectional gateways and related technologies are used routinely in critical infrastructures. The gateways are deployed at consequence boundaries. The biggest “speed bump” in the learning curve for this tech is “I see how this might work for others, but I have special needs.” In this session we review unidirectional use cases, design patterns, and technologies for consequence boundaries that include unidirectional outbound, unidirectional inbound with TPM security, time-limited bi-directional, time-limited unidirectional, two-way unidirectional, and hardware enforced remote access.
These tools and designs do not replace all firewalls in a defensive architecture – far from it. In this workshop we review where unidirectional technology is used and why, and what security benefits are provided in these contexts.
Speaker: Tjeerd Zwijnenberg – Waterfall Security
Tjeerd is the Regional (Sales) Director Europe for Waterfall Security Solutions, the global leader in Industrial (OT) Cyber Security based on Unidirectional Security Gateway technologies.
Prior to this, he worked for 20 years at OSIsoft/AVEVA and Honeywell Process Solutions at the OT side of the business.
His background is Aviation Engineering in Amsterdam (BSc) and Technical Business Administration at the University of Eindhoven (MSc).
He's working with largest CNI in Europe, NCSCs, Regulators, and being a member of FHI and European Energy ISAC.
His goal is to make the industry more resilient against outside attacks including targeted ransomware.
