Mini-symposium: Designing and furnishing laboratories

During this mini-symposium, you will discover what is involved in designing and realizing a laboratory environment. From initial design and engineering to the technical layout and use of the laboratory, various experts share their knowledge and practical experience. You will gain insight into how to make well-founded design choices, how different disciplines come together within a laboratory project, and which points of attention are important for a safe, efficient, and future-proof environment.
• Rob Kanbier (KuiperCompagnons) takes you through smart and future-oriented lab design. Designing a laboratory is not a linear process, but a well-thought-out funnel process in which the right choices must be made at every stage. Rob shows how to structure complex design challenges and how to make choices at the right moment to prevent delays and costly errors. In doing so, he addresses the importance of support within the organization and at the management level. He also looks to the future: how do you design a laboratory that not only meets today's needs but is also flexible enough to adapt to changing requirements and users?
• Derek Vissers (Kropman Contamination Control) addresses air management in laboratories and how to design and realize it optimally. Both standard laboratories and complex high-containment environments are covered. Derek demonstrates the interconnectedness of air technical and structural design and how decontamination and fire extinguishing systems, among others, are integrated into this. He also discusses the relationship between air management and BSL classifications. Using practical examples, he shows which pitfalls frequently occur and how to avoid them during design and realization. This provides you with concrete tools for realizing safe, energy-efficient, and future-proof laboratories.
• During an interactive practical session You will be introduced to the testing of a microbiological safety bench. The most important test methodologies and practical considerations are explained through a demonstration or practical exercise. You will gain insight into how the performance of a microbiological safety bench is monitored and which aspects are important for safe operation. Where possible, the session is supplemented with a containment test, so that you also gain insight into testing containment in practice.
With this combination of design, engineering, air technology, and practical tests, the mini-symposium offers a broad overview of the various aspects involved in the design and realization of laboratories. There will be ample opportunity to ask questions and exchange experiences with the speakers and other professionals.
