September 24, 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM

LOCATION: Croese room

How safely do you work? That is the question we hope you can answer after the seminar and the X-pedition. Are you working as safely as you thought or is there room for improvement?
The safety seminar will take place on Tuesday, September 24 from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM. Three experts use their expertise to explain how you can improve safety in the lab. During this seminar it becomes clear why it is so important to work safely in the laboratory and what risks are involved.

Exposure to hazardous substances, what do you do about it?

Many hazardous substances are used in laboratories. Everyone naturally wants the lowest possible exposure to hazardous substances and that is why there are many measures in most labs to reduce or prevent exposure. Yet we always keep a critical eye on whether all risks are already covered. Can and should we do more? What if situations change? During this lecture, a specific practical example will be highlighted; from identifying exposure to eliminating or reducing it where possible.

Speaker: Lonneke van der Klooster, Diagnostics for you

How important is behavior in the laboratory?

The Risk Inventory and Evaluation (RI&E) has been carried out, measures to protect employees have been taken and yet you still see that there are employees who are unnecessarily exposed to hazardous substances. There is a good chance that personal behavior of employees plays a role here. This situation was recognized by all participants (20) in the workshop on behavioral intervention during the symposium of the Dutch Association of Occupational Hygienists (NVvA) in 2022. It was also agreed that there was a need for a supporting tool with which measures can be found to adjust this behavior and thus reduce the exposure of these employees.

As a follow-up to the workshop, we started working with a group of 10 occupational hygienists in co-creation and based on the design thinking method to further shape our tool (GIDS - Behavioral Intervention Do-it-yourself tool Substances) together. And we are proud of the result! During this presentation we would like to introduce you to our interactive prototype for the tool. We are curious whether you are of the opinion that GIDS indeed offers the extra tool to be able to work healthily. We can use your input for further developments within our program.
