Hydrogen Concept Challenge
3 Participations – 3 Wins
Formula Student stands for innovation and fascination. It is a platform constantly in search of the latest technologies, striving to be a pioneer in emerging trends. In 2008, Formula Student was ahead of its time by introducing the electric category, becoming a trailblazer in e-mobility. Today, the competition aims to establish hydrogen-powered electric race cars using fuel cell technology. To support this goal, the Hydrogen Concept Challenge was launched in 2023. Its main objective is to develop a competitive hydrogen-powered vehicle as an alternative to fully electric cars.
The 2023 Hydrogen Concept Challenge focused on creating an initial concept for a hydrogen-powered race car. Our submission began with an analysis of the energy required during an endurance run, followed by the selection of key components like the fuel cell and the size of the buffer battery. It concluded with a preliminary safety concept assessment.
In 2024, the challenge expanded to require a more in-depth analysis. Key topics included the spatial integration of hydrogen components, a detailed performance analysis with lap time simulations, a comprehensive control system description, and cooling system design. In addition, the hydrogen tank had to be selected, and a detailed cost and safety plan for handling the system in both the workshop and during events had to be submitted.
We achieved three wins in three Hydrogen Concept Challenges – FS Austria (2023), FS Czech (2023), and FS Alpe Adria (2024).
The next two years will reveal whether a Fast Forest hydrogen car featuring Eurocircuits PCBs will soon hit the track.
