What is ESD safety?

Have you ever felt an electrical discharge when getting out of a car? This is caused by a short-term electric current between two differently charged objects, causing charge equalization to occur. This discharge is not harmful to humans because of the short duration of the discharge. However, electronic components and printed circuit boards with integrated circuits (ICs) are very sensitive to electrostatic discharge and can be damaged by this. This has unpleasant consequences for companies:

– high costs due to damage and/or failure
– unreliable products
- unsatisfied costumers
– more costs for repair and replacement

An electrostatic discharge (spark) can also result in fire and explosions, among other things. It can also attract dust particles, which is not desirable in a cleanroom environment, for example.

How can you prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) and the associated damage? It is important to ensure that all electrically conductive materials are grounded in an environment where sensitive electronics are handled. This includes a production environment and dispatch area, but also areas where products are repaired, tested and/or installed.
