Ethernet-APL requires more than just a new network
How do you set up an industrial network with Ethernet-APL? And what challenges do you encounter regarding interoperability, management, and cybersecurity? During the seminar Setting up industrial networks and APL At the WoTS 2026 technology fair, experts shared practical experiences and design principles for the application of Ethernet-APL in modern process plants.
Process Control Engineer Roman Eestermans kicked things off on behalf of Ebert HERA with a fascinating presentation about the APL Experience Plant, a practical setup developed by Errakal and Ebert HERA and presented to the public for the first time during WoTS 2026.
Eestermans explains how companies can test Ethernet-APL field instruments from various suppliers under realistic conditions at the installation. The setup includes, among other things, an electric motor and centrifugal pump used to circulate demineralized water. Additionally, there are control systems, safety solutions, switches, field equipment, and control technology. The goal of the APL Experience Plant is to gain practical experience with the operation, implementation, and interoperability of Ethernet-APL.
Cybersecurity and Ethernet-APL
In addition to the technical implementation, cybersecurity was also discussed extensively during the seminar. Ethernet-APL makes it possible to extend Ethernet and IP connectivity into field instruments, even in explosive environments. This offers various advantages, such as faster commissioning, remote diagnostics, predictive maintenance and better access to process data.
But this new connectivity can also be abused, according to Clemens van Wiggen, Technical Consultant Manager at HIMA Benelux. In his presentation He addresses the relationship between cybersecurity and functional safety. How do you prevent a cyber incident from leading to a loss of control, availability, or security functions? And how do you leverage the benefits of digital connectivity without compromising the robustness of security layers?
Building block digital process industry
Van Wiggen emphasizes that Ethernet-APL is a communication layer and not a cybersecurity solution in itself. According to him, a single security layer is insufficient. With multiple protection layers, such as within the HIMA SafeGuard approach, the rest of the installation remains shielded when an attacker breaches a layer. This prevents malicious actors from automatically gaining access to the entire system through a single vulnerability. Van Wiggen therefore strongly advises developers to incorporate cybersecurity from the design phase of an installation.
The common thread of the seminar? Ethernet-APL is rapidly developing into an important building block for the digital process industry. Practical experiences such as those from the APL Experience Plant helping companies apply technology responsibly, securely, and in a future-proof manner. Technical implementation and cybersecurity are inextricably linked in this process.
