Silicia 2R- A look behind the scenes of the Infinity Racing Team
Welcome to a journey through the evolution of the Silicia 2R Formula Student race car – a project that not only makes the race tracks unsafe, but also explores the limits of technology and team spirit. The Infinity Racing Team has evolved over the last few years into an impressive combination of brains, skills and passion. Here we give an insight into our team, the challenges we face and our collaboration with Eurocircuits.
About the Infinity Racing Team:
The Infinity Racing Team has its roots in student involvement. Our members, all students from different disciplines, have pooled their talents and dedication to develop the Silicia race car from an initial prototype to an advanced, electric-powered vehicle. The team, which takes on the challenges and heights of motorsport, is divided into various departments: Electrics, Software, Drivetrain, Aerodynamics, Chassis, Driverless, Organisation, Sponsoring and Finance.
The path to new development:
In August 2020, we took a bold step – the complete redevelopment of an electric vehicle. The TOMSOI XII was to be the last car of its kind and so the development of a completely new electric racing car began. This change affected not only the drivetrain, but also the chassis, suspension and bodywork. New areas and working groups were created and existing ones expanded, which required an enormous effort.
Cooperation with Eurocircuits:
The collaboration with Eurocircuits plays a crucial role in our technological journey. Eurocircuits not only provides us with high-quality PCBs, but also the eC-Stencil-Mate, which enables precise and efficient assembly. This co-operation is not just a technical partnership, but an important building block for the success of our project.
The eC-Stencil-Mate is an absolute game changer in the assembly of our PCBs. The positioning holes completely eliminate the need to arrange the stencils on the PCBs. In addition, the distance between the PCBs and the stencil can be set very precisely. This allows us to guarantee even application of the solder paste to the PCBs.
Once set, additional PCBs can be applied with solder paste within a few seconds. As we usually always assemble three boards, we save a lot of time. However, the even greater time saving lies in the much shorter time it takes to commission the boards.
As too much or too little solder paste is often applied during the manual process, poor solder connections or even short circuits between the solder pads occur more frequently.
The increased process accuracy of the eC-Stencil-Mate reduces the number of errors in the soldering process and thus the sometimes lengthy search for errors and the loss of valuable components
The high quality PCBs from Eurocircuits are perfectly suited to the harsh environments in our vehicle. Any fault on a circuit board could potentially end the race. It is therefore of central importance to us that we can rely on the expertise of our manufacturing partners and receive reliable PCBs.
The products of Eurocircuits help us to focus on the essentials – perfecting Silicia 2R. The publication of this blog on the Eurocircuits platforms is another step in our joint success story.
