🔧 What is a Surface Finish? 🔧

For this technologythursday, we’re diving into PCB manufacturing. One of the final steps in the process is to provide protection on the soldering surface, known as the PCB finish or surface finish.

The surface finish is a thin metallic layer applied to the component pads of the PCB. It protects the underlying copper from oxidation and contamination until the components are soldered in place. Without this protective layer, the copper would oxidise over time, making soldering difficult or unreliable. 🔍

Eurocircuits offers three types of lead-free surface finish:
✨ Nickle/Gold (ENIG)
🔥 HAL or HASL (Hot Air (Surface) Levelling)
⚪ Chemical Silver

Other advanced surface finishes we have available:
💪 Hard Gold for Edge Connectors
⌨️ Carbon

Each surface has its strengths and weaknesses. When choosing the right solder finish, PCB designers and engineers must consider the specific application and assembly process.
